The story so far
From dirt track to world stage
-
Early life and beginnings
PJ was introduced to motorcycles at age 3 by a family that was deeply into racing. His father, Keith Jacobsen, was an accomplished dirt track racer. PJ started on dirt tracks before moving to supermoto and then road racing, which became his professional focus.
He won the 2006 USGPRU 125GP National Championship and more than 30 amateur national titles. In 2007 he was selected for the Red Bull MotoGP Academy and moved to Europe, made his 125cc Grand Prix debut with the Aspar team at Indianapolis, and in 2010 was named flat track Rookie of the Year in the Grand National Championship.
-
Britain and Spain
Racing in Europe put PJ against the best young riders in the world. He took a podium in the Spanish CEV championship, then moved to the British paddock: in 2012 he won the British Superstock 1000 race at Donington Park and the British Supersport round at Assen, and in 2013 he raced the British Superbike Championship for Tyco Suzuki, scoring a podium at Assen.
-
World Supersport and World Superbike
From 2014 PJ raced full time in the Supersport World Championship. In 2015, at the Malaysian round at Sepang, he became the first American to take pole and win a World Supersport race, won again in France, and finished the season as Vice World Champion. He finished 4th in 2016 and 6th in 2017, moved up to World Superbike with Honda in 2018, and that summer finished 2nd at the Suzuka 8 Hours with the factory Honda team.
-
Back in the US
Returning home to MotoAmerica, PJ was Supersport runner-up in 2019. In October 2019 he suffered serious burns when his bike caught fire at the start of a race. He came back through extensive treatment and rehab, returned to Superbike, and finished 3rd in the 2023 championship with a race win at Brainerd before joining Rahal Ducati Moto.
