  • What is an apex?

    What is an apex?

What is an Apex in Motorcycle Racing?

A Guide from Jacobsen Motorcycle Training

When it comes to motorcycle racing, the apex is a concept that separates casual riders from those truly mastering the art of cornering. At Jacobsen Motorcycle Training, led by the accomplished PJ Jacobsen, understanding and mastering the apex is one of the cornerstone skills we teach. But what exactly is an apex, and why is it so important in motorcycle racing and advanced riding?

    Defining the Apex

In motorcycle racing, the apex refers to the innermost point of a corner that a rider aims to hit while navigating a turn. It’s the sweet spot that maximizes speed, control, and efficiency. The apex isn’t a fixed point but rather depends on the corner’s geometry and the rider’s approach.

Hitting the apex correctly is crucial for minimizing lap times and ensuring the smoothest line through a corner. However, there’s more to the story—it’s not just about hitting the apex but choosing the right apex.

    Types of Apexes

There are three main types of apexes riders encounter, each suited to different situations on the track:

    1. Early Apex
      • This occurs when the rider reaches the apex earlier in the turn.
      • Typically used in slower corners or to prioritize a strong exit.
      • Risk: It can compromise stability and lead to over-speeding into the latter part of the corner.
    2. Mid-Apex
      • This is the classic racing line where the apex is at the middle of the corner.
      • Balances entry and exit speeds, making it versatile for many track layouts.
    3. Late Apex
      • A late apex is closer to the corner exit.
      • Prioritizes a faster exit speed, especially useful in long straights following the corner.
      • Offers better vision through the turn, enhancing control and safety.

    The Science Behind the Apex

Cornering is all about physics: maintaining balance, controlling momentum, and managing the forces acting on the bike. By targeting the right apex, you’re optimizing the bike’s lean angle, throttle control, and line through the turn.

The ultimate goal is to reduce braking time, maintain higher average speeds, and ensure a smooth transition from one section of the track to the next.

    Training for the Perfect Apex

At Jacobsen Motorcycle Training, PJ Jacobsen and his team focus on refining your cornering technique to find the ideal apex. Here’s what you can expect:

    1. Track Walks and Analysis
      • Understand the layout of the track, corner geometries, and potential apex points.
      • Learn how to adapt your line to different situations, whether it’s wet conditions or tight competition.
    2. Throttle and Brake Control Drills
      • Practice managing your speed as you approach, hit, and exit the apex.
      • Fine-tune your ability to trail brake and smoothly accelerate out of corners.
    3. On-Bike Apex Coaching
      • Real-time feedback as you navigate turns, helping you adjust your body position, entry angle, and throttle inputs.
    4. Video Analysis
      • Review footage of your laps to pinpoint areas for improvement.
      • See how your technique evolves as you implement training tips.

    Why Train with PJ Jacobsen?

PJ Jacobsen’s expertise in motorcycle racing brings unmatched insights into mastering the apex. With years of professional racing experience and a passion for coaching, Jacobsen Motorcycle Training is designed to elevate your skills, whether you’re a novice rider or a competitive racer.

    PJ’s Thoughts:
“Today was fantastic. Yesterday, we had some struggles with grip and other factors, but I managed to go 1.1 seconds faster today. I felt strong throughout the race. Scholtz was putting pressure on me and even overtook me briefly, but I kept my composure and felt confident—even if he had caught up with the lapped bikes, I could’ve still pushed faster. I’m really happy to finish the season with a win, especially for the team. They’ve worked incredibly hard all year. Ending the season on a high note gives us a short break before we begin preparations for next year. I’m looking forward to starting to test again and having Graham [Rahal] keep things moving forward for us. Huge thanks to the entire team and XPEL.”

  • High Stakes Drama – Saturday at Circuit Of The Americas 2024

High Stakes Drama – Saturday at Circuit Of The Americas 2024

With the Supersport Championship on the line, Saturday’s race at Circuit of The Americas brought plenty of twists for PJ Jacobsen and his closest rival, Mathew Scholtz who is currently leading the Championship points. Neither of the two front-runners managed to reach the podium, shaking up the title race. The race started with intense action as 30 riders charged into the tight turn one hairpin. Scholtz’s Strack Racing Yamaha YZF-R6 bounced off of PJ’s Rahal Ducati Moto Panigale V2 leaving both Scholtz and Cardenas crashed out of the race.

Scholtz managed to get back on his bike and rejoin the race in 30th position, spending the rest of the 11-lap event fighting hard to earn a points finish.

After the dramatic first race, PJ is more determined than ever to make up ground in the Supersport Championship. Finishing fifth allowed him to chip away at Mathew Scholtz’s lead, narrowing the gap to just 14 points. But for Jacobsen, it’s not nearly enough. He knows every point counts, and he’s eager to bounce back in the next day’s race to reclaim even more of the lead.

“Yesterday wasn’t the result we were hoping for,” Jacobsen said. “But I’m feeling confident. We made some good adjustments, and I know the pace is there. Today is a fresh start, and I’m going to give it everything to close that points gap even more.”

With just three races left in the season, Jacobsen is acutely aware of how crucial each race is. He’s determined to push his Rahal Ducati Moto Panigale V2 to its limits, knowing that another strong performance could be the difference between fighting for the championship title or watching it slip away. After battling through the pack on Saturday, he’s even more motivated to put in a clean, fast run in the next race and climb onto the podium.
